Welcome to waresleywood.co.uk, a website dedicated to providing information on all topics relating to the Waresley and Gransden Woods reserves of The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

News - 19/04/2024

Good News - the Wildlife Trust BCN has reopened Waresley & Gransden woods. Some paths may remain muddy so please wear suitable boots and stick to the middle of the paths.

Conservation work parties have now finished for the season. If you're interested in joining us when work parties start again in September, contact me using the form on the About page. View the Conservation Work web page for more details of the work we carry out.

12/04/2024 - the slideshow here has been updated with images of the spring flowers that are currently blooming in the woods.

12/04/2024 - just eight days after I reported paths covered with running water, the reserve has dried out considerably. And those small blue bell like flowers are getting ready for their annual place in the lime-light!

11/04/2024 - the pretty pink flowers of the cuckoo flower or lady's smock are appearing in several of the wetter sections of the main ride. It's a member of the mustard family and a food source for the caterpillars of the orange tip butterfly.

04/04/2024 - it's hard to believe the wood could get any wetter, but on my visit today, the reserve was the wettest I've ever seen it. As expected the ditches were brim full with rain water, this is now the new normal. However, what I didn't expect to see were paths that had become flowing streams of water.

21/03/2024 - equinoxal spring has arrived and with it a very small number of bluebell plants showing closed up blue buds. Spring flowers are emerging throughout the woods and on our visit today we heard our first chiff chaff and saw our first butterfly of the year. Visit my Sightings page to keep updated with what has been sighted (or heard!) so far this year.
